As your constituent, I wanted to let you know I am deeply concerned about the UK’s ongoing trade negotiations with the EU. And I wanted to know what you are doing to protect businesses and families like mine?

The government, in the 2019 Political Declaration and in your party manifesto, promised free and frictionless trade with the EU on goods and services. However, a report by trade experts and commissioned by Best for Britain shows the UK faces an uphill battle to deliver on this promise. And as the timeline shows, the UK faces a rapidly shrinking window of opportunity. A deal must be in place for the EU to consider by the end of October.

This report identified seventeen promises made by the government about the shape of the UK's future trading relationship with our nearest neighbours, but only one looks likely to be fulfilled. The rest of the promises, including transparent rules of origin laws, zero-tariff trading and the free exchange of services are either uncertain or unlikely to be fulfilled. The effect of failing to deliver on these promises will be severe and immediate. Without tariff-free trading, many businesses will be hit with additional costs and administrative burdens, stifling their recovery from the coronavirus. Without the easy supply of affordable food from the Continent, British farmers are liable to be undercut by cheap, substandard produce imported from the USA.

The government committed to each and every one of these negotiation aims, all of which add up to a comprehensive deal with Europe. The government promised to level up left behind communities and create a Global Britain. As my MP, I urge you to call on the Government to deliver on commitments made to the British people, before it’s too late.
